Olympic Park is not the only place where records are being broken. At 04.46 on Saturday morning, Don Travers was the lucky runner at St. Colman’s College athletics track in Newry to surpass the unofficial Guinness World Record(GWR) for the greatest distance relay run of 2,680 miles set in May this year by Relay GB. While this record has yet to be verified by Guinness, the ‘KEEP ON RUNNING’ team in Newry smashed through the current official World Record of 1,923 miles at 5.20am on Tuesday 31 July, set by the Gillette Phenomenal Tour in Bulgaria in 2009.
More than 275 local runners have been running continuously- 24 hours a day since Saturday 21st July and the attempt will continue through until Wednesday 8th August at 12noon, passing the Relay GB record by at least 400 extra miles.
The record attempt was the brain child of Newry Triathlon Club member, Jacqueline Galway. Ecstatic at the achievement’ Jacqueline gave her reaction after the record was broken.
